The summer tour program at the Whistler Sliding Centre is set to begin today (June 4) and run through Aug. 31.
The program includes both self-guided and guided tours, both beginning with a check-in at the track lodge, near the base of the track on the shoulder of Blackcomb Mountain, just above Base II.
The facility is open Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission to the self-guided tours is by donation, and souvenir track map brochures are available for $3. The track lodge includes displays about sliding sports, the venue's history and ongoing operations. You can also see inspiring video footage from this past season's World Cup competitions in bobsleigh, skeleton and luge.
Guests can take a photo from inside a bobsleigh or atop a skeleton or luge, and explore the track's finish stadium, where racers reach speeds of almost 150 kilometres per hour (93 mph).
Guided tours, which last approximately 45 minutes, are led by passionate track hosts who will share inspiring stories and unique facts about sliding sports and the Whistler Sliding Centre's journey from concept drawings to reality. Tours leave daily at 1 p.m., and admissions fees are collected at the beginning of the tour. Those taking part in the tour should be prepared for easy to moderate walking.
The guided tours are on a first-come, first-served basis, and either cash or Visa cards are the accepted forms of payment. Please visit www.whistlerslidingcentre.com for rates and other details.
