Four ways to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving

While Vancouver struggles to keep going in snow and ice, drivers in Pemberton and Whistler know how to drive in wintery conditions. The big question is usually not if you are ready for winter driving, but is your vehicle?

We caught up with Mike Dymus of Silvhorn Automotive in Pemberton for tips on keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape and ready for winter.

1.     General preventative maintenance

"If your vehicle is always well-maintained and properly serviced," says Mike, "you'll be less likely to experience problems at any time of the year, but especially in the winter when a breakdown can be not only costly but incredibly inconvenient."

2.     Check those brakes

"Brakes need to be checked and serviced on a regular basis." Mike says. "At Silvhorn, when you bring your car in for a service, we'll take the brake measurements as a matter of course. We take the time to explain to you the safety factors involved and make sure you have the proper repairs. There's a virtual vehicle in the shop with animations of the various vehicle parts that allows me to explain in easy-to-understand terms what's going on and what needs to be fixed."

3.     Winter tires

"Obviously, good winter tires are a must in this area," Mike notes. "People up here tend to be experienced driving in the winter, but if the tires aren't suitable, it can lead to problems on the road. Also check the tread and wear of the tires. At Silvhorn, we take care of that for you during a regular maintenance check."

4.     Always carry an emergency kit

While maintaining your vehicle in good condition with regular servicing will go a long way to keeping you safe on the road, the unexpected could always happen.

"Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle," advises Mike. "Gloves, boots, blankets, maybe a small shovel and some sand. Also, in the Pemberton/Whistler area, make sure you have chains. A flashlight is handy with extra batteries, and keep your cell phone charged."
