Pemberton man charged after touching young girl at pool

Ryan Jonathan Mills facing charges of sexual assault and sexual interference

A Pemberton man has been charged in connection with a sexual touching incident at Meadow Park Recreation Centre on Monday night (April 8).

Ryan Jonathan Mills was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in relation to an incident where he followed a young girl at the pool into the change room shortly before 8 p.m.

"The report was that an adult male had followed a young girl into a shower in the family change room," said Whistler RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton.

Knapton said the victim, who is not a local youth, was surprised by the male and told him to leave and covered herself with a towel. However, he said the man then pulled the towel away and touched the girl, who is under the age of 12.

"She responded by pushing him away and telling him to leave, then went to find and tell her father," Knapton said, who added the victim's actions and swift response by rec centre staff were key. "The father reported the incident quickly to staff, who contacted the RCMP. We attended immediately and, as a result of our investigation, arrested a 27-year-old male for sexual interference."

Mills was released after making his first court appearance and will return to North Vancouver Court on April 17. He is under strict release conditions to not be outside his residence between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. daily, to not consume alcohol or illegal drugs, to not be in contact with any person under the age of 18, to not go to any place where someone under the age of 14 may be present and to not use a computer or cellphone to contact any person under the age of 18.

Whistler RCMP said Mills is known to police and are looking for any other witnesses that may have information regarding this event or any other crime. If you have information call Whistler RCMP at 604-932-3044 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
