Cougar spotted near Whistler Village

Whistler RCMP issued a public safety alert this afternoon (Tuesday, May 29) after a cougar was spotted near the Village.

Police got the call at about 3:25 p.m. and officers are currently out searching for the animal, said Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair. Conservation officers have also been alerted to the sighting.

The cougar was spotted along the Valley Trail adjacent to Fitzsimmons Creek north of Lorimer Road, LeClair said. That section of the trail leads to the Fitzsimmons Walk housing development.

LeClair said officers will attempt to scare the cougar into the bush, but if it appears aggressive it will be destroyed.
