Greece: Weapons cache linked to 1997 Albania uprising discovered buried

THESSALONIKI, Greece - Police in northern Greece say they have discovered a cache of weapons believed to have been looted from army depots in neighbouring Albania during a 1997 uprising in that country.

A statement Thursday says four automatic rifles, three machine-guns, 14 grenades, and more than 18,000 bullets were found buried in a remote area near Greece's border with Albania.

The weapons, discovered Wednesday, had been covered in grease to prevent rust.

The 1997 uprising occurred after the collapse of popular investment schemes in post-Communist Albania. Tens of thousands of weapons were looted when outraged Albanians overran military bases throughout the country.
