Website of Discovery Channel gunman hosted in B.C.; RCMP interested

VANCOUVER - The U.S. gunman who took hostages at the Washington, D.C. headquarters of the Discovery Channel before being killed by police ran a website that was hosted by a Vancouver-area company.

RCMP Insp. Tim Shields says the Mounties are aware of the connection and are looking into it.

"We just know that there is a connection through a website that is allegedly controlled by this Mr. Lee that has a connection to Burnaby," Shields said.

"So we're aware of this connection on his website and we're looking into it just to see what it might lead to."

The website,www.savetheplanetprotest.comwas operated by James Lee and it was hosted by Burnaby's Doteasy.com.

A spokesman for the company confirmed Doteasy.com, a free service, hosted the website and said the information has been turned over to police. He declined further comment.

Shields said the RCMP are working with U.S. law enforcement officials in an investigation that is in the very early stages.

The three hostages were unharmed when Lee was shot after he entered the building with a handgun and canisters strapped to his body.

On the website, Lee posted a manifesto expressing anger against the Discovery Channel, saying the channel promoted overpopulation.

He said it and its affiliates should stop "encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants." Instead, he said, the network should air "programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility."
