ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Premier Danny Williams of Newfoundland and Labrador is back at work, almost six weeks after having heart surgery in the United States that created an uproar on both sides of the border.
In a brief statement, Williams thanked cabinet minister Kathy Dunderdale for her work as acting premier in his absence. The 60-year-old Williams had a specialized type of surgery on Feb. 4 in Miami to repair a heart valve.
His decision to seek treatment in the U.S. triggered much debate on the state of public-private health care.
Williams said his personal health took precedence over any public fallout over his decision to get treatment in the U.S.
He thanked everyone for their support before and after his surgery.
"I was completely overwhelmed and touched by the incredible outpouring of support and prayers during this time," Williams said.
"I wish to sincerely thank each and every individual who took the time to write or call my office, and for the many expressions of well-wishes that were passed along.
