Sometimes it's nice to put on something other than snow boots and yoga pants. It's a treat to pick the Cheerios out of my hair, put on a clean shirt and head to the city.
The upcoming ModernFamilyExpo at North Vancouver’s Pinnacle Hotel on Sunday, Feb. 23 is just such an occasion. Presented by Whole Foods Market, the ModernFamilyExpo is a smorgasbord of interactive booths that showcase eco-friendly, healthy and active vendors.
For moms and dads with little ones, the ModernFamilyExpo is a chance to belly up to more than 65 vendors and learn something new. Personally, I'm looking forward to free food, entertainment for my kiddos and an excuse to talk with other adults.
The expo is the latest venture for local residents Kay Protheroe and Betty Sheeham. These self-professed "mompreneurs" are also behind the popular Sea to Sky Busy Book.
These mompreneurs are a breed of business leaders that write proposals while whipping up peanut butter-and-jam sandwiches, take conference calls while pushing strollers and accomplish a day's worth of work during naptime.
Now, they’re giving local business a bit of big-city spotlight.
"We put on the Sea to Sky Fair and always talked about expanding into North Vancouver. We are partnering with Angela Santoro of Modern Mama and it is very exciting," Protheroe said.
With Sea to Sky businesses such as Love Child Organics, Optomeyes, and Rå Energy among the participating vendors, the expo has something for the whole family. Experts and exhibitors will fall into one of five categories: Eco-Friendly Living, Food & Nutrition, Health & Wellness, Pre & Postnatal and Active Living.
The goal is to give families simple tools to live greener, healthier lives and help everyday families find ways to take "just one step" in the right direction.
"The tools enable families to take one little step closer with incremental changes that are easy to sustain," Protheroe said. "It could be using Love Child Organics baby food or even adding the Rå Energy hemp seed blend to your smoothies."
The ModernFamilyExpo is a day full of tasting, touching, learning, and questioning — a day for really getting to know the companies who are committed to expanding the idea of what is possible for families.
Along with informative exhibitors, Protheroe said there is something for every member of the family. Little ones can check out the Par-T-Perfect Kids Zone, which features everything from bouncy castles, craft stations and a Cinderella meet-and-greet to the Whole Foods Market "Play with your Food" station.
"We have a no-boring-booth policy to make sure the whole family has a good time," Protheroe said.
The expo also features more than $10,000 in prizing, including a $5,000 New Mom & Baby Package and a $5,000 Whole Family Wellness Package for attendees. Tickets are $8 online in advance, $10 at the door and kids under 12 are free.
The expo also includes parenting and health workshops, mom and baby boxing classes, healthy food and beverage sampling, as well as a family photo contest. For a complete list of everything offered at the expo, visit www.modernfamilyexpo.com.
"We are showcasing a lot of mompreneurs and larger companies run by moms," Protheroe said. "I am looking forward to having so much energy in one room and the connections that will be made between families and the vendors."
