Could a new summer music festival be announced for Pemberton as early as next week?
That appears to be the case, with concert promoter Huka Entertainment sending out invites on Thursday (Sept. 19) for a “special event” that will take place at The Meadows at Pemberton Golf Course on Wednesday (Sept. 25).
The special event will be “celebrating the announcement of a new milestone in the Pemberton community.” When asked for more details about Wednesday’s event, Huka Entertainment officials declined to comment. However, it is known that Village of Pemberton officials met with the company and other key stakeholders necessary for a music festival production earlier this year.
The Pemberton Festival attracted about 40,000 music fans to the Spud Valley for a star-studded lineup of more than 100 artists back in the summer of 2008. However, the event never returned, with festival promoter Live Nation citing logistical and financial challenges.
Last year, the Agricultural Land Commission approved a new memorandum of understanding with the Village of Pemberton and Squamish-Lillooet Regional District that opened the 2008 festival site to any promoter. A previous agreement between the three agencies stipulated that only Live Nation was permitted to produce an event on the grounds.
Sunstone Ridge owns the festival site, as well as the golf course where Wednesday’s event is scheduled. In July, Coun. James Linklater, who was acting mayor at the time, said at a council meeting that he had met with officials from Huka Entertainment and Sunstone Ridge during a reception that took place earlier in the summer.
Huka Entertainment is a New Orleans-based company that has produced many large-scale music festivals in the United States. The Huka-produced Hangout Music Festival, which has taken place in Alabama each May since 2010, has featured a number of top-tier artists in its history — this year’s headliners included Stevie Wonder, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Kings of Leon.
