I was so excited for this year's Slow Food Cycle. I was so looking forward to drinking luke-warm brown water (Letters, Aug. 22, Slow Food a bummer) and eating plastic wrapped Starbucks-like banana bread at the crack of dawn.
Instead my excitement for the day was rudely interrupted by the very loud sound of screeching tires and the instantly recognizable sound of a car crash. Every cell in my body knew that something was very wrong. How could the sound of such a crash come from an area where hundreds of people were biking? Who could be driving like that to cause such a crash? But I still wanted to wait for one those burgers. Instead I rolled my eyes and said to my friend "I guess we should race over there and see what could be delaying our cycling day. What a pain!"
But you know what really gets me going? The sight of a rolled truck in the ditch and a man who lost his life! Is the dazed kid standing around the truck the driver? Who can tell so early in the morning. Why can't my buddy get the doors to that truck open to help those girls inside? I was starting to think this year's slow food cycle wasn't so great after all. I think some of the people who were within metres of the crash weren't enjoying their day either. I felt sick to my stomach. I guess my blood sugar was low from the lack of banana bread. And to top it all off, the sound of sirens gave me a bad headache! This year's slow food cycle was such a bummer!
