It’s the ultimate ladies night at Tommy Africa’s on Thursday (Aug. 29) starting at 9:30 p.m. as the popular club hosts the search for “Mr. Whistler.”
The resort’s most gentile gentlemen and best bad boys are set to compete for the title of Mr. Whistler 2013-14, plus cash and prizes. Participants will be answering skill-testing questions about the resort, as well as displaying unique or special talents – all for guest judges and audience applause. DJ Ryder and MC Adam will be on hand to provide musical entertainment, with all your favourite dance and rock hits of the ‘90s. For more info, browse to www.tommyafricas.com.
Hounds of Buskerville return
Vancouver five-piece Hounds of Buskerville are back in action after an extended break, and the group plays Tapley’s on Friday (Aug. 30) at 9 p.m., bringing enough ska riddims, reggae grooves and punk energy to keep a dance floor skanking all night.
Saturdays at The Point
Head to Alta Lake on Saturday (Aug. 31) for the weekly Saturdays at The Point Artist-Run Centre, featuring live music under the lakeside tent with Rob "Cat" Hughes, plus gelato and cappuccino at the Book Shop Café, the Bodies of Water Art Show, and more. Go to www.thepointartists.com for more information.
Last chance for ArtWalk
If you’ve not experienced the Whistler Arts Council’s annual ArtWalk tour, you’d better hurry. The fabulous walking tour that features talented local artists displaying their works (jewelry, paintings, sculptures and more) at venues throughout Whistler Village ends on Saturday (Aug. 31), so look for a tour guide in red or grab a map and take the ArtWalk at your own pace. For more on the displays, click to www.artswhistler.com.
Outdoor Concert Series
Mark your calendars for Sunday (Sept. 1), because you won’t want to miss the next big gig of the Whistler Presents Outdoor Concert Series. This week’s hot free show at Whistler Olympic Plaza starts at 1 p.m. and features performers Jeremy Thom, Animal Nation, Ali Milner and Current Swell all on the same day.
Thom is well-known to locals for his shows around the resort, and Animal Nation are also Whistler talents whose unique brand of hip-hop can be found on the group’s newly released CD. Ali Milner is also a Whistler musician who dabbles in R&B, jazz and rock, while Victoria-based Current Swell play their own blend of folk, roots and surf rock-influenced originals.
