Opponents of independent power projects are extending an invitation to the public to inform themselves about hydro projects in the Pemberton area.

Next Monday (March 18), there will be a presentation at the Royal Canadian Pemberton Legion where residents can ask questions and learn more about the effect the approved Innergex/Creek Power river diversion project will have on the environment. It will also discuss the Pemberton Creek Request for Expression of Interest process currently being undertaken by the Village of Pemberton.

Despite two previous public open houses, one of the organizers, Louise Ludlam-Taylor says that the public haven’t had the opportunity to speak.

“This is happening in our backyard and we should be informed,” said Ludlam-Taylor.

She says people need to know about the impact on the environment and how government legislation works. It is because of government legislation that BC Hydro has to resort to IPPs. As a result, BC Hydro’s already ballooning debt is increasing and so are utility prices, she said.

Speakers at the meeting will be Gwen Barlee, Wilderness Committee Policy Director, and Dr. Craig Orr of Watershed Watch Salmon Society. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.
