Fans of Celtic and Maritime tunes should make sure to catch The Streels Thursday night (March 14) at the Dubh Linn Gate Irish pub.
Fronted by Newfoundland’s Lorne Warr — who now lives on Bowen Island — the “East Coast on the West Coast” band plays an original and eclectic mix of jigs and reels that’ll keep your feet thumping toward the dance floor. It’s the perfect way to kick of an extra long weekend of St. Patrick’s Day fun.

Skating Club Show
Also on Thursday (March 14), the Whistler Skating Club presents its biannual show at Meadow Park Recreation Centre at 6 p.m. Tickets for the event — which is called Rockin' through Time — are $10 for adults and $5 for youths.
Consumed With Weight Loss
If you spend your days thinking about diets, calories, carbs, fats and ways to achieve the perfect weight, perhaps you should check out a session with psychotherapist and coach Helen Croza at the Whistler Public Library on Thursday (March 14) at 7 p.m. The free workshop covers her approach to getting healthy called the Befriending Your Body method.
Film Movement Series
This month’s installment of the Whistler Public Library’s Film Movement Series features the screening of the Spanish film Clandestine Childhood, directed by Benjamín Ávila on Monday (March 18) at 7 p.m. The movie follows the story of a young boy and his family’s struggles in Argentina. The film — in Spanish with English subtitles — is unrated and not recommended for children under the age of 18.
Facebook for Brands
Vancouver’s “Social Media Guru” Matt Astifan comes to Whistler on Wednesday (March 20) at the Summit Lodge to teach local businesses, entrepreneurs and employees the tips and tricks of using Facebook as a cost-effective marketing tool.
The four-hour workshop is offered twice — at 9:30 a.m. or 5 p.m. — and costs $60 at www.cloud9marketing.ca.
Student Art Award deadline
Each year, the Whistler Arts Council recognizes artistic achievement in the visual, literary, performing and media arts by graduating students from elementary and secondary schools in Whistler, Pemberton and Mount Currie with Student Art Award and Art Bursaries.
Students applying for the Student Art Award are asked to submit a portfolio of three to four recent works which were completed in addition to school projects and a letter from a teacher stating that these works were created outside of the classroom.
Application deadline for the Student Art Awards is May 3 and the awards will be presented during the graduating ceremony of each school in June, 2013.
The bursary is valued up to $250 and given to students attending art camp in summer 2013 to pursue their studies in the visual, performing, literary or media arts. Application deadline for the Summer Art Bursary is on May 24.
