Once the sun goes down on the mountain it can be hard to find fun activities in the Village for the whole family to take part in, but starting next Thursday (Feb. 7), the Whistler Museum is looking to fill that gap.
Their new Kiddie Aprés children’s program will run every Thursday through March from 3 to 7 p.m. The activities are meant to compliment the municipally-run Family Night in Olympic Plaza, which will begin on Wednesdays sometime in February.
“Apparently there’s a little bit of a gap in the market for after skiing (activities for children),” said the Whistler Museum’s executive director Sarah Drewery. “(Tourism Whistler’s) been getting feedback from families that they’re enjoying skiing during the day but they’re not finding as many things to do after skiing … We’re really keen to do some more family programming so we thought this was a good time to do it.”
After a long day on Whistler Blackcomb, the kids can take part in a variety of fun and educational activities, like a scavenger hunt with prizes, Lego building or they can even take a spin on the museum’s new button maker. The little ones can choose to draw their own picture to make into a button or they can use some historical Whistler items to create their new fashion accessory.
Along with providing some new options for family-oriented activities in town, Drewery hopes the programming will provide some secondary benefits to local children as well as out-of-towners.
“For all the local kids that come, I think it’s really important to understand their history and where they come from. For the visitors to the resort, there’s plenty of really important information, especially to do with the natural history and things like being bear aware and just general education which they can get out of the exhibits,” said Drewery.
While Kiddie Aprés is only slated to run for several weeks, Drewery said the museum is “always looking for more ways to engage people” and if it proves popular, the program could continue in the future.
Kiddie Aprés begins next Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and children must be accompanied by an adult.
