Conservation officers have issued a cougar warning for a trail located in the Function Junction neighbourhood of Whistler on Monday (Jan. 14).
Conservation officer Peter Busink said a member of the public, who was out on the Flank Trail in the Function Junction area, spotted the cougar feeding on another animal.
"We are just advising people to stay off those trails for a few days to allow that cougar to finish its kill and move on," he said.
Cougars typically stash their kills and feed from their prey for several days. Depending on the time of year, weather and the health of the cougar, it may defend its kill site more aggressively.
"There is a possibility that it may defend its food cache and that is what we want to warn people about," Busink said.
A conservation officer has attended the area and observed that people are still using that trail at this time of year. As a result bylaw officers have put up signage to let people using the trail know there is a cougar in the area.
