A CN train derailed just south of Suicide Hill on Thursday (Jan. 3), blocking both lanes of Highway 99 between Whistler and Pemberton.
Local RCMP received a call around 2 p.m. from a witness who saw the derailment. Three empty rail cars were derailed, with one toppling from an overpass onto Highway 99, blocking both north and southbound lanes.
A single lane was opened to alternating traffic around 3:45 p.m. It is expected that only one lane will remain open until Friday (Jan. 4) morning. RCMP are advising drivers to plan for major delays on the highway.
"There have been no reports of injuries that I'm aware of," said Whistler RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair. One vehicle sustained minor damage from flying debris.
Both RCMP and CN Rail are continuing to investigate the cause of the derailment.
DriveBC will provide updates on the road closure at www.drivebc.ca.
