In response to Tanya Foubert's story "Private compost facility up and running," I am writing to show my support for Sea to Sky Soils and their initiative to start making compost that is useful to local farmers and gardeners.

I grow organic vegetables for a living, and would find great value in having a local source of compost that would meet the criteria set by my certifiers. Instead of seeing food waste as an expensive waste to process, we should be using it as a valuable resource and making it into usable compost, not mixing it with sewage and paying to get rid of it.

It is the RMOW and council's duty to find effective and efficient ways of dealing with waste, and this seems like an excellent opportunity to take a step in the right direction. Your reporter writes that the current facility is sending up to 30 per cent of its waste 600 kilometres away to a landfill? It is absolutely ridiculous to do this when we have the right people, technology, resources and market to compost it right here in the Sea to Sky.

I say we get to work on making this happen, and start turning our waste into valuable resources.
