Whistler Half Marathon adds 10K run

Capacity for half marathon increased to 1,100 for 2013

There will be a new 10-km event as part of the third annual North Face Whistler Half Marathon, organizers announced Tuesday (Dec. 11), while spots in the traditional 21.1-km race have been increased for 2013.

Race director Dave Clark said it’s always been part of the event’s growth plan to add a shorter course, and it will feature a 10K for the first time on June 1.

“Now that we are entering our third year with a loyal running community, we felt it was time to increase the offerings and make our event available to more athletes,” said Clark.

The 10-km course will use the first third of the main course, wind through the Village and feature a start and finish line at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

“The 10-km course will offer a similar experience for runners looking for a shorter distance,” said Clark, who recommended it for new runners or as a training race ahead of other events.

Meanwhile, the half marathon registration cap will grow to 1,100, up 10 per cent over last year’s sold-out event, while 500 spots will be available for the 10-km run. General registration is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The Little Rippers Kids Run will also be back for another year, with a short course around the plaza for youth following the half marathon.
