There is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time.
A group of four hikers from Abbostford in the Sloquet area found that out this weekend after assisting people in two separate incidents.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair said on Saturday (Nov. 17) evening officers responded to a report of an intoxicated female who had been swept away in the Sloquet River.
“She was hot and purposely went into the river to cool off,” LeClair said. “She underestimated the current and was swept down stream several hundred metres.”
The group of Good Samaritans was nearby and helped pull the 29-year-old Vancouver female from the river and provide first aid. While hypothermic, when emergency services arrived she opted to seek medical assistance on her own, said LeClair.
But, he said, the ambulance and RCMP did not arrive immediately as they had received a notification of a spot beacon in the same area. The beacon had been initiated by the group from Abbotsford, who had come across an intoxicated man who had been pinned under an ATV for over an hour.
LeClair said they helped move the ATV off the man and provide first aid to him and a female, who was also injured in the accident and admitted to driving the vehicle and was under the influence of alcohol.
They were taken to the Pemberton Health Care Centre and then the male was transferred to Lions Gate Hospital.
“The male passenger sustained significant injuries to his lower back,” LeClair said. He added the 18-year-old Abbotsford driver is facing potential charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Frauds reported
Frauds perpetrated through Craigslist continued to be reported to local RCMP last week.
LeClair said on Friday (Nov. 16) a complainant reported receiving a fraudulent cheque through the website. He said the woman was hired by email to clean a residential property in Whistler, but received a cheque for an amount that exceeded the payment for the work.
“When she presented the cheque at the bank it was determined to not be valid,” he said.
A rental fraud was also reported in relation to an address at 6100 Moritz Street. LeClair said the suspect is using a pseudonym of Adam Savage.
Meanwhile earlier this month three Australians reported to police they had been defrauded of approximately $9,000. LeClair said the three made arrangements over the Internet before arriving, which included rent payments for an address in Blueberry and money for ski passes.
