Members of the Lower Mainland RCMP Emergency Response Team respond to an armed standoff with a suicidal male in Day Lot 3 in the Whistler Village on Saturday night (Nov. 3).

An armed standoff between Whistler RCMP and an Abbotsford man in Day Lot 3 has ended with the man shooting himself although police believe his injuries are not life threatening.

Sgt. Rob Knapton said the incident began at 3 p.m. when Whistler RCMP were informed of a suicidal male heading to Whistler, who was also in possession of a firearm. After negotiating with him, the male suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the incident is currently under investigation.

"We were able to come across the vehicle and find him in the area south of the town and he proceeded to where he stopped somewhere in Day Lot 3 and moved into the bike park area," Knapton said. Unfortunately, despite our efforts the male suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The 41yr old Abbotsford resident was transported to the Whistler Health Clinic for treatment.

The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team was dispatched to the scene along with the conflict negotiation team to attempt to negotiate a peaceful end to the incident.

"The goal is always to resolve this thing peacefully," Knapton said.
