Are you tired of not getting the recognition you deserve for belting out all those ‘80s power ballads alone in the shower?
Well, the chance to show off your musical chops is here with the third annual Whistler Music Search, a month-long showcase of local artists taking place at the Crystal Lounge.
The contest runs every Thursday for four weeks, starting Sept. 27, with plenty of prizes — including a brand new Tackamine electric acoustic guitar for the winner provided by Molson — awarded to Whistler’s biggest and brightest acts.
Participants are encouraged to bring their original or cover material to the stage, where four judges from the local music and entertainment industry not named Paula Abdul will mark performers on several different criteria: presentation, technical ability, originality and crowd response.
“We’re looking for the overall entertainment vibe,” said Dave Morris, the event’s organizer and a rockin’ musician to boot, who is known around these parts as Dr. Dave.
“Any original music that you bring to the table is gonna score you large,” he added.
Musicians will get a chance to perform on one of the first three Thursdays, with finalists advancing to the last round on Oct. 18, when the overall winner will be announced.
Morris was quick to note that while the Whistler Music Search is about finding the best the Sea to Sky has to offer, the essence of the event is bringing together aspiring artists “more for a fun night of music than a competition.”
“It gives everyone a reason to come out of the house, work on their stuff and polish up their banger set.
“Everyone gets to meet each other and see what everyone’s doing musically and exchange contact info. It’s a good networking opportunity,” he said.
Past participants have included Whistler fixture and multi-instrumentalist Michael Faiella, vibrant popstress Rachel Thom and last year’s winner, the soulful Mike Fromontreal.
“I’ve always been plugged into the local music scene,” Fromontreal said, having spent the past nine years polishing his set in Whistler. “It was just nice to have that little title where my peers agreed I was the best at that moment.”
The winner will also get to craft the perfect album with professional studio time provided by Bunker 7 Productions in Pemberton.
Other lucky artists that make an impression can pave their way to stardom with potential paid gigs at the Crystal Lounge.
