RCMP are looking for a cyclist who was almost hit by two youths street racing in Whistler last week.
Sgt. Rob Knapton said they would like to speak to that person as a witness to the street racing incident last Tuesday (July 24) at 10:40 a.m. at the intersection of Blackcomb Way and Nancy Greene Drive.
“We are looking to meet the cyclist,” Knapton said. “That person who almost was hit did leave the seen.”
The two 17-year-old novice drivers approached the intersection and were unable to stop resulting in them having to take evasive action to avoid the cyclist, who was in a marked crosswalk.
One vehicle, a 2009 Mazda, was able to stop but the other, a 1995 Ford Explorer, struck a boulder and became stuck. Once dislodged, both drivers attempted to flee the scene but several witnesses prevented them from driving away before police arrived.
An investigation revealed the pair are employed together and had departed work a short distance away from the intersection when they began to race.
Knapton said street racing in general is not a specific issue for Whislter but given the nature of that roadway he is concerned by the actions of the two youths, who had their vehicles impounded for seven days as a result and are facing several charges under the Traffic Safety Act.
“Where they were doing it causes me concern – that is a sharp corner whether there is a cyclist there or not,” he said.
