Riders in one of Whistler's weekly Toonie bike races enjoy a stretch of the Valley Trail, which is part of the Sea to Sky Trail.

Avid mountain bikers, more casual cyclists and trail runners are all invited to celebrate the Sea to Sky Trail and newest addition to the Valley Trail in Whistler next Sunday, July 17.

A community trail ride and other festivities are set to begin at Cheakamus Crossing at 10 a.m. Bikers' yoga, a kids' bike decorating station, light refreshments and an official ribbon cutting ceremony are all part of the fun.

The trail ride and run will follow the Cheakamus Crossing to Brandywine Falls segment of the Sea to Sky Trail. It's a 25 kilometre round trip that features scenic mature forests, the Cheakamus River, Brandywine Falls and other sights along the way.

"This event marks a major milestone in Whistler with the completion of the multi-year Valley Trail project through to our newest neighbourhood as well as marking the completion of the Cheakamus Crossing to Brandywine Falls section of the Sea to Sky Trail project," Gordon McKeever, Sea to Sky Trail project manager, said in a news release.

The community event is also in celebration of the new stretch of Whistler's Valley Trail from Spring Creek to Cheakamus Crossing — an 1,100 metre section that completes the multi-use Valley Trail from one end of the Whistler valley to the other. The 40-km Valley Trail serves as the Sea to Sky Trail route through Whistler.

“The Valley Trail is an incredible visitor and community resource for both transportation and recreation. The trail offers a quiet alternative for people’s commutes, and it is a recreational favourite of residents and visitors alike. This addition of the Valley Trail is a major milestone for Whistler,” Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed said in the release. “We are proud of the major contribution that the Valley Trail has made the Sea to Sky Trail and connection it has created between the communities in the Sea to Sky corridor.”
