Whistler vet clinic now offers acupuncture

Business Briefs

Veterinary acupuncture is now available at Coast Mountain Veterinary Services. Dr. David Lane recently passed the International Veterinary Acupuncture Association exam and is practicing acupuncture on a daily basis.

The most common use for veterinary acupuncture is for the treatment of muscular or neurologic issues. Animal patients that are limping, weak or uncoordinated are great candidates, but it can be used to treat a variety of internal medical conditions as well, including digestive issues (vomiting, diarrhea, diminished appetite), seizures, urine leakage and many others.

Acupuncture works especially well when combined with chiropractic therapy, which Dr. Lane has been practicing for years, as well with the ongoing sports medicine and rehabilitative training he has been receiving. In addition to Coast Mountain Veterinary Services, there are four other veterinary facilities that employ Dr. Lane as their primary orthopaedic surgeon, and to provide second opinion consults on difficult lameness cases.

With Whistler’s athletic dog community, sports injuries are common. Acupuncture is an effective tool for getting dogs back on their feet, and back onto the trails where they belong. For more information, you can visit the Coast Mountain Veterinary office at #203-2011 Innsbruck Drive (above Food Plus in Creekside), call 604-932-5391 or visit www.whistlervet.com.

A new café has opened just outside Whistler Village for those who love to hit the trails or take a stroll. Whether you’re looking for a morning coffee on the patio, a post-ride panini or a gelato on a hot summer afternoon, you will enjoy the Connection Cafe.

Located in Lost Lake PassivHaus, Connection Cafe offers light eats and satisfying sips with a focus on all natural, organic and local products. Cafe manager Joni Denroche is bringing her own special brand of casual food to the beautiful environment of Lost Lake Park.

“The idea is to create a uniquely Whistler experience at the café. The opportunity to sit outside on the patio at Lost Lake PassivHaus, sip on a Pemberton Valley Coffee Co. organic coffee and enjoy both the natural surrounding and great people-watching is distinctive. It’s a great place for a pre- or post-ride get together and a wonderful experience for tourists,” Denroche said.

The Connection Cafe officially opened on June 11 and is operating daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the summer season. The affordably priced menu items include on-site baked cookies and croissants, smoothies, banana bread, paninis, gelato, brewed and espresso coffee, teas and cold beverages. The dismal Whistler spring weather this year has many homeowners putting off staining their decks, siding or fences, waiting for a string of sunny days that may never come. But Whistler resident Bill Willis has created a formula that is perfect for these conditions.

Traditional solvent-based wood stains require many days of hot, sunny weather before they can be used. Broda Pro-Tek-Tor is a natural oil wood stain that uses water as its carrier, so cooler weather and wood that is not perfectly dry are no problem.

CBR Products, a Vancouver company born in Whistler and owned by local resident Willis, formulates wood stain and architectural coatings especially for the Coast Mountain environment. Willis and his team also advise customers on the best ways to stain and finish when the weather is not cooperating.

“Depending on the surface of your deck, fence or siding, you may only need one day of dry weather to get the job done,” said Willis. “Pressure-treated wood that has never been coated just needs to be power-washed, then dried on the surface for Broda Pro-Tek-Tor to soak right in.

“For a brand new deck, or wood that needs to be re-finished, it just has to be dry enough to be sanded. Two or three days of clear weather and you could be sanding and staining. After coating, just make sure the project is protected so rain doesn’t hit the surface until it’s dry. Then when the hot weather really hits, you’re at the beach, in the lake or golfing instead of working.”

The Broda line also includes water-based Clarity acrylic and Pro-Thane urethane finishes. All Broda products are low-VOC and clean up with soap and water.

Willis was a log homebuilder in Whistler for many years, and offers his practical expertise to solve coating issues on many major projects in the Pacific Northwest. For more info, call 1-888-311-5339, visit www.cbrproducts.com or email info@cbrproducts.com.
