It’s hard to believe this is already the 30th Terry Fox Run.
Once again, the Terry Fox Run will take place in Roberts Creek, starting and finishing at the Roberts Creek Elementary School on Sunday, Sept. 19. This venue provides an opportunity for participants to utilize the gravel loop that circles the field (for the three km run) and the quiet streets around the school for the five and 10 km events.
Registration will open at 9:30 with the official start for the 10 km run at 10 a.m. Participants not competing may start anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. While it is called a run, participants are encouraged to walk, jog, bike or wheel as well. Once again, many draw prizes have been graciously donated by local businesses.

This run is an important fund-raising event for cancer research. It is the second largest non-government fundraiser for cancer research in Canada. Today, more that $500 million has been raised by the foundation. The Terry Fox Run is very efficient: three per cent for administrative costs, 10 per cent for fundraising, which means that more than 87 cents of every dollar raised goes to cancer research.

The Gibsons event starts at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre at 9:30 a.m. with registration at 9. There will be a warm-up, and there is a variety of routes including one, three, five and 10 km distances.
“The main event is the number of folks who turn out to participate in memory of a remarkable young fellow who continues to inspire the community, the province, the nation and the world through the determination and vision he shared as he pursued a goal to overcome cancer,” said Gibsons volunteer run organizer Mary Findlay. “The research that is possible through pledges and donations raised by the Terry Fox Foundation gives us hope that treatments and cures can provide comfort and hope to the millions of Canadians affected by this condition.”
