Questioning festival’s intent

Editor:

As I was working away on my salmon art piece to contribute to the Gibsons Landing Salmon Festival’s fundraising auction, it was brought to my attention that the Gibsons Landing Business Association could be offering a multinational fish farming company a voice and a booth at this otherwise wonderful event.

I was shocked, as I know something of the death and destruction that farmed salmon have caused our wild salmon, and it didn’t seem to mesh with a Salmon Festival.

Consequently, I phoned two members of the association to confirm this. I then located http://farmedand
dangerous.com
, which I encourage you to do if you care about our precious salmon, and learned much more about the environmental, health and job risk impact that the salmon farming industry’s current destructive practices are plaguing us with.

The GLBA has a wonderful mandate to follow that includes promoting a healthy community and sustainability and much more. It is beyond ignorance that our little town would buy in to allowing the salmon farmers a presence, thereby further promoting their unconscionable works (under the guise of education) at our local festival.
