Last week’s column offered tips on how to stay in the not-so-perfect job should it not be the right time to make a switch. But if you are confused about your career direction, there is no time like the present to discover your true path.
Creating a game plan will help you to move forward to a role that will better suit you. Consider the following:
List pros and cons of your past experiences — likes, dislikes, what challenges you, what inspires you or what drains you?
Promote yourself. If you don’t tell a potential employer what you can do, how are they to know?
Be positive and patient! Letting disappointments affect your outlook shows potential employers that you can’t ride life’s ups and downs.
Prepare. Identify companies that appeal; know their goals.
Learn about particular jobs that fit your new criteria. The more you know, the better you will be able to tailor your application.
Your resumé is your showcase. Prepare it accordingly.
Qualifications and achievements should obviously shine through on your resumé, but also highlight them in an interview.
Network. Get involved, get visible, get noticed.
Pick up the phone. I’ve often heard people say “I never heard back when I sent my resumé in.” Following up shows professionalism, attention to detail and enthusiasm.
It’s up to you to make things happen. Ask yourself the tough questions and your answers will very likely lead the way. In the coming weeks, I’ll share winning techniques to put you ahead of the competition.
