Routley part of ProTour team

Whistler’s Will Routley, who became the 2010 national road race champion earlier this year, has earned a berth on the Canadian team that will take on the world in the prestigious UCI ProTour cycling events this month in Quebec.

The two Canadian stops — the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec on Sept. 10, and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal on Sept. 12 — are the first ProTour events in North America.

Routley joins a group of 12 Canadian riders who will wear the maple leaf to match wheels against the world’s best. The team was officially announced last Wednesday (Aug. 25).

Team officials will choose riders from the team of 12 to compete in each race, which will include about 184 top-calibre international competitors. Nine of the road cyclists are from Quebec, two are from B.C. and one is from Alberta.

PhaSt series wraps up

Whistler’s PhaStest downhill riders of 2010 have been determined, as this year’s edition of the PhaSt Wednesday race series concluded in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park last week. The PhaSt Wednesday racing wrapped up with Kenny Smith and Brook Baker sitting atop the overall Male and Female standings, and Ollie Gregory-Jones and Chris Dewar becoming the Junior and Master male champions, respectively.

Smith sped to one last win in last Wednesday’s men’s race, while Sarah Leishman took top spot in the women’s race after surging back from a shoulder injury. Gregory-Jones won the Junior Male division and Bart Brown was victorious among the Master men. Luana Auer finished first in the Junior Female category.

The final race featured a course on Fantastic, Crank It Up, Lower Whistler Downhill and B-Line. The PhaSt Wednesday series is the more technical sibling of the Phat Wednesday events, and both series are run by Whistler Blackcomb and the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association.
