It’s on our licence plates and it’s the provincial government’s slogan — it’s official: B.C. is the best place on Earth.
And with B.C. Day just around the corner, the folks at the Whistler Museum want to know why you think B.C. is so awesome. They’re inviting community members, residents and visitors alike to come out on Monday (Aug. 2) and help celebrate all that the beautiful province has to offer.
The event, which will take place both outdoors and inside the museum, will include crafts, displays from different sectors that define B.C. life, cake, and storytelling for kids. Admission to the museum will also be by donation all day Monday.
“We wanted to have a community celebration,” said Amanda Rousseau, the museum’s summer marketing coordinator and event organizer.
She said the idea for the event came from B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell’s comment that B.C. Day is about celebrating what makes the province the best place on Earth. The event will explore elements that make up life here, such as forestry, mountain biking, mining, fishing and more.
Displays and representatives from various sectors will help people learn more about B.C. and the different things that define the area. One display will include more than 100 pieces of art created by kids at the recent Whistler Children’s Art Festival on the topic “My favourite place in Whistler,” Rousseau said.
The event will kick off at 11 a.m. with a welcome dance by staff members from the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. Story times for kids are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 2 and 4 p.m.
With topics such as fishing and logging, the stories are about B.C. life as well, she said.
The museum is also putting out a challenge to Whistlerites to submit their own work of art or creative display that depicts their favourite aspect of life in the province. Rousseau encouraged people to be “creative.”
To submit a creation for the event, contact Rousseau at (604) 932-2019 or education@whistlermuseum.org.
The Whistler Museum’s B.C. Day celebration happens on Monday (Aug. 2) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday. The museum is located on Main Street behind the Whistler Public Library. Visit whistlermuseum.org for more info.
