After February’s hiatus, Whistler Blackcomb’s on-mountain events are getting back in gear. The ever-popular Showcase Showdown, which was initially scheduled for March 6, has been moved to April 3, but those who are raring to race should take note: The Kokanee Valley Race Series is starting back up next Thursday, March 11, with a giant slalom event on Blackcomb.
The following Thursday, March 18, will mark the end of the KVRS season with the dual GS and team relay on Blackcomb.
The legendary Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race still has room for a few four-person teams looking to take up the challenge of racing tip to toe on Whistler Mountain. Set for March 26 and 27 this year, the Peak to Valley race is a prime draw, but some of the previously registered teams have had to withdraw, and some team spots are available.
Any teams that have been longing to tackle the long-standing race with a course more than five kilometres long, through a vertical drop of 1,443 metres and 180 gates, should not miss this opportunity to enter. Call WB Guest Relations at 1-800-766-0449 to snap up the spots.
Nordics back in action
After an Olympic hiatus, the Whistler Nordics are getting back in action with their Toonie race series on Thursday nights. Tonight (March 4) marks the return of the recreational racing on the Lost Lake trails, with registration opening at 5:30 p.m. at Cross-Country Connection for a 6:15 p.m. race start.
If snow conditions permit, the race is set to run on the Lost Lake, Lower Panorama, Old Mill and Cedar Way trails, starting and ending at the Cross-Country Connection booth. Kids and recreational racers can turn around at Helen’s Corner. Make sure to bring headlamps, as not all the trails are lit.
The race fee is $2 for Whistler Nordics members, and non-members can have a try-a-Toonie rate of $5. Lost Lake trail passes are required. The après is hosted by race sponsor Quinny’s Café.
The final race of the season is set for next Thursday, March 11, if conditions permit, so start storing up snow karma to get the flakes to fly.
