Ready, set, train for spring running

The View From Pemberton

Winter may still be here, but that hasn’t stopped the arrival of training season for spring running events.

Here in Pemberton, we’re lucky that nowadays we have the option of getting our cardio workouts (and maybe even hitting some weights) indoors at the Pemberton Community Centre — for those days when it’s too icy or cold to hit the road to get in the day’s designated number of kilometres.

Lucky for many of us, it’s a far cry from those days in Pemberton when running outdoors in all sorts of weather was required if getting the distance in on your training plan was a top priority.

With the Sun Run coming up on April 17, and the first Whistler Half Marathon on June 4, not to mention the Vancouver marathon and half marathon on May 1, it’s time to get running, if running happens to be your thing.

But in between workouts, there’s still plenty to do in Pemberton…

World-renowned speaker John Helliwell will make a presentation at Big Sky on Thursday, March 10 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and a public forum at 7:30 p.m. This event is presented by Leadership Sea to Sky.

Among his other achievements, Helliwell is professor emeritus of economics at the University of British Columbia, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Dr. Helliwell was educated, and taught, at Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and at UBC.

His research tracks what makes people happy at home, in their communities and at work, and how government and business can use the information to create happier and more productive communities.

Dinner is $50 per person ($30 for members of the Whistler Forum); the public forum is $15 per person ($10 for forum members).

Connect is coming to Pemberton. This attachment-based program is designed to support parents and caregivers of preteens (ages 8 to 12) and teens (12 to 18). Connect is a 10-week program to help parents and caregivers who are struggling to understand and respond to difficult behaviour. This new program’s target start date is the end of March.

At Connect, parents meet in small groups with two trained group leaders for one hour each week. Each session provides parents with information about parent-teen relationships and adolescent development. Participants watch role-plays and try exercises that open new choices for responding to their child’s behaviour.

Connect helps parents see choices that support healthy relationships while setting limits and helping their teen to move forward.

Anyone who would like to be on the Connect interest list, or for more information, contact Mackenzie at (604) 894-2091, extension 2269, or by email, Mackenzie.Leslie@gov.bc.ca, or Dianne at (604) 894-2091, extension 2235.
