Story:
When you think of going to see a DJ, the general assumption is you’ll be dancing to pre-recorded beats pumped out by some anonymous looking guy in sunglasses and jauntily askew ball cap behind a laptop somewhere.
But if you’re going to see a DJ Champion show, like the free concert in Whistler Village Square Saturday (Feb. 27) at 6 p.m., then be prepared to change those preconceived notions.
DJ Champion, a.k.a. Maxime Morin from Montreal, throws down an eclectic and improvisational show that’s a unique mix of live, guitar-driven music and electronic beats featuring his band, The G-Strings — four guitarists, a bass player and “MC” on vocals.
As for DJ Champion, you’ll find him at the side of the stage with his two laptops, providing the electronic percussion, beats and foundation for the high-energy, rocking tunes. Aside from the beats and percussion, everything you hear at a DJ Champion show is live, instrument-produced sound.
Morin has been part of the Montreal music scene for more than a decade, previously performing as Le Max and Mad Max, and composing music for movies and TV. In 2001 he got fed up with working for others and doing what was expected of him, so he started merging his two loves — guitar and electro — in a solo project that seems to appeal to everyone from young ravers to baby boomers.
Catch DJ Champion and the G-Strings in Whistler Village Square at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
