Bilodeau makes it look too easy

VALLEY TALK

Welcome to Bilodeau country.

It’s been a while since I saw so many Canadians so exuberant over the antics of a kid from Montreal. And what antics they where! The man takes the first set of moguls, pulls a back double twist out of his pocket and lands it clean — let’s face it; at that point he pretty well had it in the bag. A super fast run and clean back flip at the end were the icing on a delicious cake, made even more scrumptious by the fact that he was able to politely ask Dale Begg-Smith — he of the born in Vancouver, moved to Australia, talking only to Aussie media Begg-Smith’s — to “move over rover and let Alexandre take over” the first spot on The Couch.

There really is only one tiny problem with this whole televised show. These people make it look way too easy, so here’s what I would like to invite you to do. Make your way over to the terrain park on Whistler, go through the gate — don’t worry about the signs, tell’m Ruiterman send you — now stay to the far left and ride those kickers you find there.

If you can air them do so. Hey, if you can a throw a 360 — awesome! Now visualize a bunch of moguls leading up to the kickers and you riding like a bat out of hell. Try it, go ahead, go really fast, feel the speed. Well, you’re almost done. All that’s left now is to kick off the ramp and do a back flip while spinning twice around your core. Don’t forget to land straight and true because there’s and other set of moguls waiting for you and you’ll want to ride them even faster than the first set.

There ought to be a law against making it look that easy.

By the way, did everybody watch the ice hockey ladies go to town first against Slovakia and two days later against the Swiss? I don’t know about you but I get an uneasy feeling when I see a team score three goals in the first 10 minutes. I get the feeling I am looking at a train wreck in progress and I hate to see a team of skaters from a small country being taken to the manglers. But then again, you play with the big girls you takes your chances.

Of course by the time you read this, the Canadians will have had a thing with the Swedes — a whole different kettle of fish. The Swedes have been laying the same kind of hurt on the Swiss and Slovaks as the Canadians, although not with the same amount of exuberance. Time will tell, but — and here comes the neck — it’ll be Canada 5 Sweden 3.

Got to see the snowboard cross golden run where Mike Robertson won a silver for Canada, and what a race it was eh? Did you see Seth Wescott sneaking up on Mike and grabbing that tiny bit of extra speed in the corner and off that ramp? That’s what snowboard and ski cross are all about — speed, balance, strategy and sneakiness. Ya gotta love it, more to come!
