2010 torch relay comes to Lil’wat

Title: Hi, my name is Linda Dan. I was born and raised here in my territory: Lil’wat Nation, Mount Currie, B.C. (St’at’imc ). My parents are Julia and Moody Dan. When I was first asked to be a torchbearer by Elaine Dan, she said I would be a great person for this role; all I needed to do was fill in a 2010 Olympic Torch Relay application. In that application were only two questions to answer in a letter form.

First Question: What will carry the torch mean to me?

It would be a great honour to carry the torch in my territory, where I was born and raised. I want to carry the torch for my passed-on elders, parents, and especially my son Kent Dan, may he rest in peace, and for present and the future generations… for that, I am a proud mother and grandmother. Just being a positive role model by implementing the spirit of the flame, a part of Olympic history here in Canada.

Second Question: What do you do to get involved in your community?

I am an Early Childhood Educator, I love working with children and youth. I am a spiritual leader and apply my traditional practices when and where appropriate. I embrace our culture and traditions and thoroughly enjoy all the recreational, spiritual community activities that take place here.

The big celebration on Feb 6, 2010 was all that it would be.

My spirit for all Canadians and my people, family, friends all across to the East, West, South and North was a very memorable, exciting, proud, overwhelming time for me. My heart was so in the spirit of 2010 torch relay. It was a very proud experience to have made history here in my homeland of Lil’wat Nation, for myself and for my community. I believe.
