MuchMusic offers new spin on Games coverage

Youth audience targeted with musician interviews, VJ competitions and party vibe at daily live broadcasts in Whistler Village

If you’re watching 2010 Olympic coverage on a news station, you’re bound to find mostly footage of the sport competitions. The folks at MuchMusic want you to know they’re taking a different view of the Games in Whistler — one that’s about nightlife, ski/snowboard culture and hot tubs.

The MuchMusic crew is getting ready to broadcast two live Much On Demand (MOD) shows from the Garibaldi Lift Company each day during the Games, Feb. 12 to 28, and everybody in Whistler is invited to the party.

“It’s going to be an amazing show,” said Tim Deegan, one of four MuchMusic VJs who have arrived in Whistler to host MOD. “We really have the best location in the Village.”

And they’re not joking about the hot tub part. The MOD outdoor set at the GLC includes a hot tub and people in Whistler are invited to jump in for a soak — if they can find room.

“There’s only so much space in the hot tub,” Deegan said with a laugh.

The MuchMusic touches outside the GLC also include a mini ski/snowboard terrain park. The 2 p.m. daily MOD show will take place entirely outside the GLC, while the 7 p.m. broadcast will take place both inside and outside the pub.

In addition to bringing musicians and athletes in for fun, informal interviews, the MOD shows will also highlight Whistler’s West Coast lifestyle. Deegan and fellow VJ Liz Trinnear will spend much of their time taping segments about local life. For example, last week Deegan hung out with a couple of pro snowboarders who toured him around the Village introducing their favourite spots, he said.

“I get to see what Whistler’s all about,” Deegan said.

The shows will also feature competitions for local fans such as “Date a VJ,” with the prize of dinner and a sleigh ride with one of the hosts. The four VJs in town for the show will compete against each other in challenges, too — Deegan said he’s heard rumours about bungee jumping.

“There’s a lot going on in every show,” he said.

Some special guests are already confirmed, with others to be announced. Bedouin Soundclash will be in the MOD Whistler studio on Feb. 14, Faber Drive on Feb. 18, Hedley on Feb. 20, Stereos on Feb. 21, and Jesse Labelle on Feb. 22, Deegan said.

People who are in Whistler are invited to come down and see their favourite stars in person and be part of the show, he said. MuchMusic has always been big on giving fans as much exposure as possible to musicians and stars, he said.

When athletes come in to chat, it won’t be like an interview when they’re straight off the podium, Deegan said.

“It’s more relaxed; it’s more of them in a casual setting,” he said.

The MuchMusic broadcasts are all about allowing youth to experience the Games in a non-traditional way, Deegan said. While MOD won’t be officially covering the Olympics, VJs will update viewers on the medals count and highlights of competition.

Deegan is stoked to be hanging out in Whistler for the month, and the Toronto-based snowboarder already knows it will be hard to leave when it’s all over. He said he’s excited to reach a whole new audience and meet as many people as possible.

“We really wanted to come to Whistler because they have a nightlife like no other, they have snowboarding and skiing like no other,” he said of MuchMusic executives’ choice to bring the show to Whistler instead of Vancouver.

MOD live broadcasts take place at the GLC daily at 2 and 7 p.m. starting Friday (Feb. 12). It’s free to get involved and the parties are all-ages.
