QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Arts & Entertainment
Jamaica Bobsleigh House set to open Feb. 12

Maybe it’s just me, but Whistler and Jamaica just seem to go together really, really well. Maybe it’s because of the similarities.

Both are places people go for vacations. Both have reputations as party places. Both have connections to bobsleighs.

Hmmm, now what else? I’m sure it will come to me. Darn short-term memory.

In the meantime, make sure to set some of your Winter Games time aside to head to the Jamaica Bobsleigh House in Whistler, as the team has partnered with the Savage Beagle to host “the ultimate Jamaica experience up at the Games.”

You’ll get to meet the current team, as well as members from the original Cool Runnings team, and enjoy live music, food and beverages every afternoon and evening from Feb. 12 through 28.

“Day” access to Jamaica Bobsleigh House is from 2 to 8 p.m. and “night” access runs 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Early bird tickets are $30 plus tax for daytime, $40 plus tax for evening parties and $100 plus tax for VIP packages.

BOBSLEIGH JELLYBEANS: What can I say? It’s just a bobsleigh kind of week.

Head to the Lift Coffee Co. patio on Friday (Feb. 5) for a meet and greet with “Team Anderson,” one of Canada’s emerging young teams of bobsleigh athletes and the inspiration behind the children’s book Bobsleigh Jellybeans.

Whistlerites Paul and Talya Shore wrote the book after they befriended the athletes while they trained at the Whistler Sliding Centre during the winter of 2008-‘09.

Team Anderson will be signing copies of Bobsleigh Jellybeans on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. on the patio of the Lift Coffee Co. They’ll also have a real bobsleigh on hand so you can hop in and check out how it feels.

And if you miss them on Friday, they’ll be back on Saturday (Feb. 6) at the same time.

Did I mention there will also be free jellybeans?

WHISTLER READS HOSTS GOLDEN MEAN AUTHOR: On Sunday (Feb. 7), meet author Annabel Lyon as she leads a Whistler Reads group book discussion on her latest novel, The Golden Mean.

The book is a work of fiction detailing the story of philosopher Aristotle and his relationship with a boy who would later be known as Alexander the Great.

It’s been getting rave reviews, and earning Lyon lots of praise for her prose.

Last year, the book was nominated for both the Governor General award and the Giller Prize, and it won the Rogers Writers' Trust Award.

The Whistler Reads group discussion with Annabel Lyon starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Whistler Public Library on Sunday.
