Strike involving Whistler-YVR bus service averted

Whistler guests apparently won't be inconvenienced this weekend by a strike involving the bus line that carries passengers between the resort and Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

Officials with Pacific Coach Lines (PCL) and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 114 have reached a tentative agreement in their contract dispute, according to an online report.

CBC News reported the agreement on Friday (Jan. 1), less than 24 hours before the 127 drivers and other PCL workers were scheduled to walk off the job.

On its website, the company posted a notice that read, “We are pleased to advise that it is business as usual with no disruption to services.”

On Tuesday (Dec. 29), the union served PCL with 72-hours' strike notice, with plans to walk off the job on Saturday (Jan. 2) at 12:01 a.m. The company responded with a lockout notice that would have gone into effect on Friday.

CBC, however, reported that a company spokeswoman had said a tentative deal had been reached in mediated talks and that a strike had been averted. Details must be finalized and the agreement must be ratified by the membership, the spokeswoman said.

PCL operates the only authorized airport shuttle service between YVR and Whistler. It also operates service linking Vancouver, Victoria and Nanaimo with service aboard B.C. Ferries.
