Young athletes ages eight to 14 who are keen to speed and slide should take note of their final chance this season to test the ice at the Whistler Sliding Centre. The last on-ice recruitment camp of the 2009-’10 season is set for Sunday (Nov. 22) from 9:15 a.m. to noon.

The Canadian Luge Association has been seeking to draw in the next generation of luge athletes through camps in Whistler and Calgary, and a youth luge program has been blossoming at the Whistler Sliding Centre. Camp participants can be invited to join the youth program.
Some of the sliders already working with the program have been putting in valuable gym time over the summer to bolster their skills, and Simon has said she hopes to have about 15 to 20 athletes in the program this season. The participants usually slide two or three times per week, with four sessions available each week, and it seems that they will be able to hit the ice until the end of January, at which point the 2010 Olympics will take over the track.
Nordics need gear
Pemberton and area skinny-ski enthusiasts should get excited about next Monday (Nov. 23), as the Spud Valley Nordics are set to host their Ski Swap and Annual General Meeting on that date at Pemberton’s Cottonwood Community Centre.
Skiers looking to augment their selection of gear should come to the community centre’s Room A at 5:30 p.m. for the swap. Anyone can bring whatever Nordic ski equipment they choose, including skate and classic skis, boots, poles, clothing and jackets. Particularly great demand for children’s gear is expected.
The AGM is scheduled to follow at 7 p.m., and all are welcome. Skiers can join the club and find out about the range of events on offer, as well as the local groomed ski trails.
