Q. VANOC recently released a statement in which Games officials pledged to seek a “balance” between freedom of expression, encouraging athletes to compete at their best and spectator enjoyment. What does the Olympic Charter say about the issue?

A. The charter states that no demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda of any kind is permitted inside a venue for the Olympic and Paralympic games. This includes limiting advertising by Games sponsors in the field of play, which aims to ensure that the Games remain focused on celebrating sport and Olympic values.
