World Police and Fire Games vollies sought

Mountain biking, golf and orienteering to take place in Sea to Sky corridor Events

The organizers of this summer’s World Police and Fire Games are seeking volunteers to help with Games events taking place in the Sea to Sky corridor.

The World Police and Fire Games are one of the largest sporting events in the world, drawing more than 10,000 athletes. They include competitions in some 60 sports at 50 venues around southwestern B.C. from July 31 to Aug. 9, 2009. The event is open to full-time professional firefighters, law enforcement personnel, customs and correctional officers from around the world.

The events to be contested in the corridor include golf (at Big Sky, Whistler Golf Club and Nicklaus North), orienteering (at Brandywine Falls Provincial Park) and both downhill and cross-country mountain biking (in Whistler).

Available volunteer positions include mountain biking course marshals and officials, conversion teams, Games Management Centre staffers, officials to verify golf competition registrations and media accreditation personnel. Volunteers will work two or three shifts each between Aug. 2 and 7, Games organizers said in a statement issued on June 19.

Those interested in volunteering can get more information and register by visiting the 2009 World Police and Fire Games website, www.2009wpfg.ca and click through the volunteer section and online registration. Volunteers from the Sea to Sky region should indicate Whistler as their area of deployment.

Games officials are also seeking qualified health-care professionals to be part of the Games medical team. Positions still need to be filled in the categories of first aiders, first responders, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, athletic therapists, chiropractors and trainers.

Those chosen to be part of the Games team will receive an honorarium to recognize their contribution and the time away from their practice or profession. For information please visit the Games website, www.2009wpfg.ca
