Yeah, we know the weather is fantastic and you probably have a dozen ideas for how to spend the early part of your Friday evening outdoors. But if you venture inside for just a few hours you’ll be rewarded with boogie-worthy live blues, R&B and rock — plus the opportunity to do a good deed simply by socializing and getting down.
The Raise the Roof fundraiser party and auction is set for Friday (June 5) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Buffalo Bill’s. Organized by staff members at the Delta Whistler Village Suites, the event is a fundraiser for both the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program and Habitat for Humanity.
Squamish-based band Bluesberry Jam is set to provide the entertainment and inspire killer dance moves with its mix of blues standards, classic R&B and rock favourites. Ethan Askey, who plays harmonica and trumpet and sings in Bluesberry Jam, said the band’s repertoire includes songs made popular by the Commitments, Blues Brothers, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, Stevie Ray Vaughan and more.
The bottom line: Bluesberry Jam plays upbeat, recognizable music meant to get people moving.
“We sure can make people dance,” Askey said.
Bluesberry Jam is a six-piece band — including a horn section — that has a 13-year history in the Sea to Sky. Its current lineup, including Askey, has been playing for the past few years. He said he joined after hearing through the grapevine that the band had lost its harmonica player.
The band has played in most Squamish and Whistler venues over the years, with many gigs at charity and corporate events, birthdays and weddings.
If the band name Bluesberry Jam sounds familiar, that’s because it is — Askey said there are bands located in Quebec, Buenos Aries and the U.S. that share the same name. He said the name comes from a line in a song, but it’s also the name of the 1960s band in which Canned Heat drummer Fito de la Parra got his start.
Askey said the Sea to Sky Bluesberry Jam is getting ready to hit the recording studio next week to lay down a few tracks for an upcoming website. Before that, though, the musicians will be helping to raise the roof with their hot blues, R&B and rock at Buffalo Bill’s.
The Raise the Roof fundraiser party runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday (June 5). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, or in advance at the Delta and the Visitor Info Centre. All money raised at the event will be split between Habitat for Humanity and the Whistler Adaptive Sports Program.
