Yoga for a cause

A two-year-old yoga-based fundraising program is coming to Whistler Secondary School to encourage support of the United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) “Unite for Children. Unite against AIDS” campaign.

Starting Wednesday (Nov. 12), students, staff, parents and community members alike will be welcomed at the school to participate in weekly yoga classes on Wednesdays and Fridays between 3:45 and 4:45 p.m., leading up to a symbolic 108-minute yoga event on Dec. 5.

The initiative is the brainchild of Maxine Druker of Vancouver’s YogaKids Society, and it is designed to encourage giving back to the world through yoga, activity, fitness and raising awareness of and money for the UNICEF cause.

Admission to the classes and the main event will be by donation, and the sessions will be led by local instructors. Participants will be encouraged to collect or donate money for the cause, and fundraising drives will be held in Whistler Secondary classes and participating local yoga studios and businesses.

Pack on the prowl

Ably assisted by a parade of points from Pemberton’s Joshua Schaubroeck, the Squamish Wolf Pack has been steadily adding strokes to the win column in the ledger for the Pacific International Junior Hockey League (PIJHL) team’s inaugural season. Schaubroeck logged an assist in a 6-4 Wolf Pack win over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Oct. 17, a goal in an 8-2 loss to the North Delta Devils the next night and the game-winning overtime goal in a thrilling 7-6 win over the Mission Icebreakers on Oct. 25.

The Pack’s subsequent 5-3 win over the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Oct. 29 was an especially busy night for Schaubroeck, as he scored a goal and dished out a helper.

Last weekend, Schaubroeck again popped the puck past the Mission goaltender in a 5-4 Wolf Pack road win on Sunday (Nov. 2), as the team recovered from a 4-3 loss to the Grandview Steelers on Saturday (Nov. 1).

The Wolf Pack improved to a 6-11-0 record as the team heads into a busy stretch of away games, travelling to play tonight, Saturday (Nov. 8) and Sunday (Nov. 9) before returning to the Brennan Park Arena on Tuesday (Nov. 11) for the second half of a home-and-home clash with the Devils.
