So You Think You Can Dance teaching workshops

VILLAGE VIBE WITH STEVEN HILL

So you think you can dance, eh?

Or maybe you just want to learn from one of the hottest professional dancers in the country and a top contestant on So You Think You Can Dance Canada?

Well, you’re in luck, because on Saturday (Oct. 30) Areito Dance hosts three sizzling dance workshops from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Core with Arassay Reyes.

Cuban-born, Reyes was accepted into the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana when she was 12, training in contemporary and traditional African and Afro-Cuban styles of dance, as well as acting, gymnastics, and choreography.

She soon earned a position with the dance company Compania Contemporanea Nacional de Cuba, and performed around Cuba until she came to Canada. After three months here, she won a spot on the first season of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

Saturday’s workshops at The Core feature three hours of intense and fun and wicked rhythms as Reyes shares her passion for dance with an hour of reggaeton, an hour of salsa Cuban-style, and an hour of Cuban Rueda de Casino.

The three workshops can be taken separately or together, and are $18 for members and $20 each for non-members, or all three for $40 (members) and $50 (non-members).

For more info go to areitodance.com or arassayreyes.com.

WINTER FARMERS’ MARKET: Head to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre (SLCC) every Sunday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. for Whistler’s fabulous Winter Farmers’ Market.

Hosted in the beautiful Istken Hall, the Winter Farmers’ Market features local farm-fresh produce, wonderful artisan-prepared foods, jewelry, clothing, paintings, arts and crafts, unique gifts and so much more.

Shopping at the farmers’ market is not only a great way to meet new people and old friends, and become a part of the community, but also support local Sea to Sky farmers, artists and artisans.

And while you’re in the neighbourhood, step into the SLCC to take in the fascinating First Nations exhibits, programs and history. You haven’t experienced Whistler unless you’ve seen its rich First Nations roots and the living history of its Native people.

The SLCC Winter Farmers’ Market runs every Sunday in the Istken Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Go to slcc.ca for more information.

CHILDREN’S CHORUS HALLOWEEN CONCERT: Get into the scary Halloween spirit early this year and head to Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church on Friday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. for a ghoulish and spooky Halloween concert.

The Whistler Children’s Chorus is a non-audition community choir with members ranging from ages 6 to 25. The choir has been making music in Whistler for more than 15 years.

Admission to Friday’s concert is free, and of course, you’re encouraged to dress up and come in your wackiest or most frightening costume.

MUSEUM BRIEFLY CLOSED: If you were planning on stopping by the Whistler Museum on either Friday (Oct. 29) or Saturday (Oct. 30) — you’re going to be disappointed.

The museum is closed on both those days while some exhibits undergo renovations.

When the Whistler Museum reopens on Sunday (Oct. 31), you’ll find an installation of new Olympic artifacts and an Olympic Games experience, more interactive exhibits, plus new panels.

Go to whistlermuseum.org for more information.
